I am having a hard time believing ancient Hawaiians used coconut shells. Those aren't even remotely soft or useful for any sort of hygiene purposes. With all the vegetation around, they used coconut shells?

They still do. At least back in 74. We took a ski trip to a chalet in the Swiss alps (you hiked 2 1/2 miles up a mountain to get there). There was NO running water, so you used an outhouse, and melted snow for water. And yes, if you ran out of TP, you used snow!

Took care of the hemorroids too!
